The architecture of the modern city quietly decides who you will never meet.
Nairobi rebuilds itself faster than it remembers itself, and the two facts are not unrelated.
A city keeps its memory in unremarkable places: the shape of a junction, a wall that used to be a doorway, the way people walk around a plot that has been empty for thirty years.
When those go, what is lost is not heritage in the brochure sense. It is the ordinary competence of knowing where you are.

Where does public transport fit in your argument? The matatu is the one place in this city where I still end up next to someone whose life is nothing like mine. It seems like it should be a counter-example and you do not mention it.

You could write this entire essay again about Nairobi and change almost nothing except the street names. The fence, the gate, the guard, the second gate. Nobody planned for us to meet.
